Airplane Etiquette PSA
So I just finished my travel voucher from last week's trip, and it reminded me of something that really pissed me off on my flight home - airplane etiquette, or lack there of, specifically on the trip back to Baltimore. The girl sitting next to me pissed me off so much before take off that I moved across the aisle to the other aisle seat once they closed the door. Thankfully, the row was unoccupied with the exception of the window seat.

Part 1 - Middle seat:
When you are sitting in the middle seat, it is basically a given that you get first dibs on both arm rests. That is the minor benefit that you get for having the sucktastic seat in the section. That benefit, however, does not entitle you to spill your elbow across the arm rest and into my space.

Part 2 - Cell phones:
Yes, the chance that your cell phone or electronic device will emit enough interference to mess with instruments and communications is next to 0. That being said, you are not special. When they say that all cell phones must be turned off for the duration of the flight, that doesn't mean everyone but you. Besides, if everyone on the plane had their cell phones on, there is a chance that it could in fact have an effect on the plane's instruments. The aforementioned stupid girl now sitting across the aisle from me is on her phone texting DURING FINAL APPROACH AND LANDING. The 2 most critical times where there should be NO chance of emitting interference are take off and landing. Let me reiterate, you are not special. Put the frakking cell phone away. There is nothing that is so important for you to say that it can't wait until we have landed.

Part 3 - Exiting the plane, AKA deplaning:
It is generally accepted that you let the row in front of you exit before you start to move forward. There are exceptions to this rule if the people are staying on or are waiting, but generally speaking, row 1 goes before 2, 2 before 3, and so on. Bear in mind, I was sitting in row 6, so not all that far to go. The same stupid girl across the aisle from me decides that she absolutely has to get off the plane before anyone else, and as soon as the seat belt light goes off, she is pushing, yes pushing ahead of people in at least rows 4 and 5. Let me say it again, you are not special. Wait your turn.

We all know that air travel sucks more and more these days, but don't make it worse. Don't be that guy, everyone hates that guy.

FIVE THINGS MEME: Ask, and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

Razorbagel gave me:
1. Rock climbing
2. Penn State
3. The Army/Aerospace Engineering/Airplanes/Spaceships/whatever
4. Cats
5. Beer

1. Rock Climbing - Rock climbing is both my passion and my downfall (no pun intended). For a long time my exercise activity of choice was martial arts, but then I started having knee issues that made it tough to throw all of the kicks. So I started getting pretty serious into climbing about 3 years ago. There's really no feeling like getting to the top of a climb that has been giving you trouble. It's also really cool when you're outside and can look down at something you've just made it to the top of. So lets rewind to last summer. I had been climbing off and on since I was travelling and I wound up biting off more than I could chew on one climb and wound up tearing something in my shoulder. So after several months of rest and a try of preventative PT, I'm still not where I need to be and wound up having surgery the beginning of Feb. So now I'm working on getting range of motion and strength back in my arm, and I can't wait to get back on the rocks.

2. Penn State - What can I say, I love Penn State. I spent 4 of the best years of my life there. I love going to see the lion shrine, I love spending a saturday afternoon with nearly 110,000 of my closest friends cheering in Beaver Stadium, I love that whenever I meet someone that also went to PSU we immediately share that common bond that most Penn Staters seem to have after spending 4 or so years up there. I can't really explain it, it's just a feeling you get up there.

3. The Army/Aerospace Engineering/Airplanes/Spaceships/whatever - Pretty broad topic, but I'll see what I can do. The Army is good enough to pay me every 2 weeks to allow me to continue living independently :) The Army offered me a job as a test engineer almost 7 years ago, and being that I didn't have much else in the way of job offers, I figured I'd take it. So after 5 years of blowing shit up, I was offered another job as a reliabiity analyst for more money and management that sucks significantly less. Aerospace engineering was my major up at State. I guess completing that degree helped me get the jobs I've had so far, though I haven't done any real engineering. As far as airplanes go, they are a big part of what drove me to study aerospace engineering. I have vague recollections of going with my dad to the Philly airport and sitting outside the runway (when you could still do such things) and watching the planes take off and land. It was really cool. I've just always been fascinated by planes. When I was in HS, I started training to be a pilot and almost went to school to do it professionally. One of these days I think I'd still like to finish up getting my pilot's license.

4. Cats - When I was a lot younger, I grew up with a cat and a dog, Shana snad Sandy. Sandy died when I was pretty young, but I remember Shana used to hop up on my bed and sleep on my feet. Fast forward a bunch of years and when I bought my house in MD, my roommate, Pete, had a couple of cats, Boo and Bandit. They were always cute and friendly and Boo used to sleep on my chest when I fell asleep on the couch. Once Pete moved out I decided that I wanted to have a pet (or 2) but knew that I didn't have time for a dog. So I wound up getting my 2 cats, Sergeant Pepper and Nittany (her name used to be Pineapple, and I said "oh helllll no"). They're fun even though sometimes I want to kill them :) One of these days, when I have more time or someone to help me, I think I'd like to get a dog, but for now, Sarge and Nittany will just have to do =^_^=

5. Beer - Beer is yummy. I am going to expand this to alcohol in general. Alcohol in general is also yummy. I recently stumbled (also no pun intended) on Firefly. I know what you're thinking, how can anything called Firefly be bad. Well, that's absolutely correct! Firefly is deliciousness in a bottle. It is iced tea flavored vodka. I concocted a drink that tastes just like sweetened iced tea with lemon, but it will get you drunk :) Pretty much take 2 parts Firefly, 1 part iced tea, and 1 part sour mix. Adjust the recipe as necessary and enjoy :)

Thanks Oki

Literary meme
1. Comment on this post.
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Think of 5 fictional characters and post their names and your comments on these characters in your LJ.

Oki gave me "A"

Airwolf - Not really a character, but a fictional helicopter. She's a pretty tough fictional helicopter though. Stealth, armed to the teeth, can fly like mach 2 (I said fictional, remember.) Anyway, I remember watching Airwolf with my dad when I was a kid. Good times... good times.

Astyanax - In greek mythology, he was the son of Hector. He was a baby during the Trojan war, and was supposedly thrown from the battlements of the city of Troy. In some versions of the story he survives and in others he dies. The only reason I know any of this is because there was a video game that I loved on the NES called Astyanax and I looked it up a long time ago.

Ace McCloud - From the old school cartoon "Centurions." (Power X-treme ^_^) He was a cocky fighter jock and always had the coolest "vehicles" that attached to his suit.

Auron - From Final Fantasy X. Quite possibly the coolest Final Fantasy character ever. Awesome swordsman, cool scruffy voice, just overall bad ass.

ALF - I just watched an episode of ALF on hulu. If you don't know who ALF was, I'm no longer talking to you :-p

OK, time to disappear for another 40 weeks or so. Hopefully I'll remember to actually do an update one of these days

holy crap, an update

Zoinks! Last update August 1st? I haven't even looked at LJ in months either. So let's see, what's been going on in the world o' Aaron these days...?
Work is going pretty well. I've been slowly but surely figuring out exactly what it is that I'm supposed to be doing here :) I did a bunch of traveling for said job in November and December. I also learned that traveling for work isn't nearly as exciting as I thought it was. It's actually pretty tiring. I did get to see some cool stuff though.
Climbing is going great. I'm going to face my fear of falling and take the lead climbing class next week. I fully expect some unholy things to come out of my mouth when we start practicing falls.
My martial arts training is still on hiatus (could be fairly permanent) due to a partially torn LCL in my knee. It gets sore from time to time but it doesn't get in the way of every day stuff or rock climbing, but martial arts practice seriously aggravates it. So we'll just have to see where that goes. I do miss practicing though.
I'm another year older. There was a bouldering competition on my birthday which I took part in and I won my division. Granted it was the beginner's division (since I hadn't bouldered seriously in close to a year) but still, it was cool to win. So far, 28 feels very much like 27. I did get a giant ass TV and an Xbox 360 though. I also bought Rock Band for the 360 this weekend and already have an (arguably) unhealthy addiction to it ^_^ What can I say, I'm a whore for music/rhythm games.
Speaking of music: My friend Becky has introduced me to a great band called Ben's Bones. They're pretty much awesome. You should check them out.
So yeah, aside from the normal stuff, that's what's been going on. I'm sure I've left some things out as I'm getting forgetful in my old age :p
Until next time

new job, new friends, new degree?

Wow, 2 months since an update... I am going to just stop saying "eventually I'll update more regularly." So the last 2 months in a nutshell:
I had my last day at ATC at the end of June. I will definitely miss a lot of the people, but there are others that I definitely won't.
I started my new job at AEC doing reliability analysis. I'm still wondering why they put me in the vehicles section though. There are essentially 3 sections: vehicles, weapons and ammo, and aviation and missiles. Let's break things down. I have a degree in aerospace engineering and 5 years of experience testing weapons systems. Working with vehicles sounds like the perfect section for me ::sarcasm:: What can I say, it's the Army. That being said, I like the section and team. I'm in an office where 3 of the 4 of us are Penn Staters, my team leader is nice, my boss is nice, things are pretty good.
Otakon was a couple of weekends ago. I learned, no rather, reinforced something very important. I AM NOT A MORNING PERSON! If I do spec-ops again next year (which depends a lot on who will be running things) I am definitely not taking a morning position. All in all, I had a good time at con. I met some really great people this year. As always there were the people that took 2 heaping handfuls of stupid before coming to the con, but the good definitely outweighed the bad.
Now for some future stuffs. Our director gave the state of the organization presentation this morning. He talked a lot about where things are going with the future of AEC. He also talked about pursuing an advanced degree (which they will pay for). I've been saying for the past couple of years that I'll eventually go back to school and get a masters. Now, I am really thinking about buckling down and doing it. I looked at the degree programs that Hopkins offers and one really jumped out at me - Systems Engineering. How does that sound? I'm honestly intrigued. I have to find out more info, but I think that I want to try to get started in the spring. I don't think that I'm ready to start in September. I have to wrap my head around the idea of going back to school. Next step: find out more information about the program and pray that they'll let me in.

So I was scanning today's news headlines and what do I see, "Hilton well after night in jail." Really now, is this news worthy, let alone one of the first things you see on every news splash page? Do we have to look forward to this for the next 3 weeks that she's in the can? Don't get me wrong, I think it's fantastic that celebrities are finally starting to be held accountable for their actions, but do we really need a play by play on their daily lives? "Hilton gets shanked at dinner table," now that could be a news worthy headline.

new job on the horizon

Yes, that's right, I got a new job. I got a call last week from AEC that they want to hire me (and give me more money, yay!). It was all I could do to keep from saying "oh hell yes" when they asked me if I was still interested in the position. As tempting as it was to just put in my 2 weeks and say "see ya, I'm out," I feel semi obligated to be a good employee and finish up the projects that I am working on, or at least get them to a point where they would be easy for someone else to take over. That being said, I start on 25 June, and I can't wait to get out of this place. I have a feeling that I may be starting a wave among my co-workers too. They're starting to realize exactly how much we are getting screwed with here. For example, a buddy of mine was accepted for a management position here that was posted as a GS-13 (basically making 80k). When he got his job offer, it was for about $73,000 (3k more than he makes now). They justified that by saying that the job was not a promotion for him, but a lateral move, and therefore only subject to a maximum of a 5% raise. For the amount of extra work that will go into that job, a $3,000 raise is ridiculous, especially when the position was posted at $80,000. I'll just chalk that up as another reason to be glad that I'll be out of here soon.

Clearly, I suck at updating.
So I went on vacation a couple of weeks ago to Puerto Rico with Scott and Jeff, and I can't wait for it to be warm again. This whole being cold thing sucks. Puerto Rico was great. It was in the 80's during the day, 60's at night, aaaah, wish I was still there. Pictures can be found here here and here. We did some rock climbing, some chillaxing, and quite a bit of drinking :)
In other news, I had a phone interview with the FAA yesterday. It could have gone better, it could have gone worse. Hopefully they'll call me back for an in person interview. I'll just have to see what happens. If I get the job, I'll actually be a rocket scientist. How cool is that?

new years and stuffs

Lets start by saying happy new years to everyone. I know it's a week late, but most people should have gotten a text sometime within a couple of hours of midnight (assuming I had your phone #)
That being said, I was doing some thinking (and LJ reading) about normal new years stuffs like looking back on the year, resolutions and the like.

Upon initial inspection (to borrow a line from some of my reports) I thought that 2006 was a pretty "blah" year. Upon further inspection, it turns out that 2006 wasn't nearly as blah as I thought. Granted I went through my little rut phase, but I also met a lot of new friends, and reconnected with a fair number of old ones. 2006 was not without its share of tragedy though. Rest in peace Mikey and Michael.

On the subject of new years resolutions: I'm not making any this year. I was doing some thinking, and I realized that while they are good in theory, if you don't accomplish them, it ends up being a downer when you look back on the previous year. So here are some thoughts on some of the more common resolutions I've seen:
Lose X # of lbs - achieving/maintaining good health is a constant effort.
Get in better shape - see above
Find a girlfriend/boyfriend - much like good health, if you're single (and not wanting to be) when are you not trying to find a significant other? On that note, people always say "you always find someone when you're not looking for someone" or something to that effect. How does one stop looking?
Get more organized - organization is overrated =Þ
That's not to say that I don't have things that I want to accomplish this year, but I'm not going to go so far as to say that I resolve to do these things by the end of the year. (as a new years resolution implies)

So I guess 2006 wasn't so bad, and 2007 has started off pretty well so far. We'll just have to see what the remaining 357 days have in store.

...can't sleep, future will eat me

Well, as I have been saying off and on for the past few weeks, "It could be the start of a new era." After 4 and a half years of blowing shit up for a living, I decided that I actually want to be a rocket scientist (or some semblance thereof) like my degree says that I am. So I finally went and did it, I applied for a couple of jobs with the FAA in DC. One of the jobs is a real stretch (I think it may be a little above my level, but we'll see) and the other, I am fairly sure that I am qualified for. Either way, they're both involved with airplanes or spacecraft. So what does that mean for me? I'm not totally sure yet. Will I stay in Baltimore and just suck it up and commute or will I sell my house and move closer to DC? If I do move, how close to DC? I have a few ideas, but again, I'm not sure. I know that I'm getting a little ahead of myself, I mean, who knows if I'll even get an interview for either position, let alone be offered a job? I dunno, I just think about these things. I guess we'll see what happens.

Everytime I go back it becomes harder to leave

Wow, 2 updates in a month let alone back to back days... yeah, don't get used to it. Anyway, I went back to dear old State this weekend. I love that place. I miss that place. I need to make it a point to go back more often.

So I spent the weekend with the Koval and his lovely wife Jess (incidentally, also a Koval) and many good times were had. I rolled in on Friday afternoon and caught up. Later in the evening we went to the homecoming parade then Mike the tool, an old roommate and friend, stopped by with some other Penn Staters that we hadn't seen in forever. Saturday was football day. I hadn't been to a PSU football game in over 5 years. I will not let that happen again. We tailgated a little bit before the game (yes, I was drinking by 11 am ^_^) then went into the stadium. The game started out a bit slowly, but by the 4th quarter, Beaver Stadium was rocking with me and 106,000 of my closest friends (spare a few Illinois fans). More tailgaiting after the game included seeing more faces that I hadn't seen in years, along with a few rounds of flip cup. I decided to introduce them to the Kickball League of Baltimore's up and back rule variation which was well received :) After some food and chillaxing, we headed out to the bars. I had forgotten just how crazy the bars up at State can get. We wound up leaving the Phyrst around midnight because it was just too crowded - there was literally no room. We wound up heading out to the Sports Cafe which was significantly less crowded. More good times were had including going camera crazy. I'm still working on posting some of the pictures from the weekend. Sunday was a decompression day which consisted mostly of watching the heartbreaking losses by both the Eagles and Steelers.

Thanks again go out to Koval and Jess for putting me up for the weekend and putting up with me for the weekend. I left PSU this past weekend with more friends than I came up with. That seems to happen every time there. I love the common bonds that most Penn Staters seem to have after spending 4 or so years up there. Blue and white forever - WE ARE PENN STATE!!

So another beloved comic of mine comes to a close. I got started reading Mac Hall a few months before Otakon thanks to shelli982. It owned my soul for a little while, and gave me much amusement. I even went back and reread a bunch of the strips, it's that good. If you haven't seen it before, give it a read. I met these guys at Otakon this year, and they couldn't have been nicer. They both signed my book, and Ian did me a quick sketch on the spot. They're awesome. Apparently they're still going to do strips from time to time, but it won't be the same Mac Hall. Thanks for the run, guys.

Yes, that's right, football season is upon us! It started this past weekend (well, actually Thursday, but whatever). Penn State whooped up on Akron 34 - 16. Yes, I know it's Akron, but it's a start. This weekend will be a much greater test against Notre Dame. The NFL season also kickes off this coming Thursday, and the Eagles kick off (pardon the pun) their season agains the Texans on Sunday. I love football season.
